Under the influence of an upper air circulation (UAC), a low-pressure area has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal. It is expected to move northwestward over the next 24–36 hours and has the potential to intensify into a depression if it remains offshore.
As a result of this synoptic setup, rainfall activity has increased across many parts of Tamil Nadu since yesterday, with coastal areas already recording heavy rains.
With strong convergence persisting along the Tamil Nadu coast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the delta districts and north coastal regions during the next 36–48 hours.
Chennai and its surroundings can expect intermittent showers through the day, with the possibility of more sustained spells developing by evening.
