Monsoon Picks Up Pace As West Coast Enters The Firing Line

Rains are likely to increase markedly in the southern peninsula as the monsoon is likely to pick up pace. Intermittent rains with a few heavy spells are likely in Kerala and some parts of southern Karnataka, leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall totals along the coastal stretch. This rainfall belt is likely to intensify and gradually shift northwards along the coast with time. This is instigated by the movement of an upper air circulation westwards across south central India which is likely to indirectly deepen the off-shore trough. Rainfall is likely in several places in Telangana and interior parts of Maharashtra, with Madhya Pradesh too joining the fray. Some parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Odisha could experience spotty rains and thundershowers.
While northwest India could continue recording soaring temperatures, the southern peninsula is likely to see relief from searing heat as moderate temperatures are likely in the peninsula, with a couple of pockets of hot, uncomfortable weather in Tamil Nadu.
City Outlook:
Chennai – Moderate heat likely as temperatures could peak at 35 C, amidst partly cloudy skies. A shower possible in the evening.
Madurai – A rather warm day with the thermometer hitting 35-36 C in the afternoon. Patchy rains possible in the evening.
Trichy – Hot afternoon ahead with maximum temperatures of 36-37 C with thunderstorms possible in the district later in the day.
Coimbatore – Comfortable day on the cards with the mercury not crossing 33 C. Drizzles likely in the city.
Vellore – Fairly warm day with the mercury hitting 34-35 C during the afternoon. Showers likely in the evening.
