Normal SWM monsoon in June sets similar expectations for July across India
Southwest Monsoon (SWM) was normal across the country in June 2017. Earlier before June, meteorologists across the globe expected an “ELNINO” phenomenon in Pacific Ocean by August/September, which was threatening the monsoon and had fingers crossed. Later by June several met department have begun to rule out the “ELNINO” phenomenon and finally the Indian Summer Monsoon back on track. This has finally ended up in June in normal category across the country. The average rainfall for June for the country is 156 MM, whereas country on the whole received 158.7 MM, it is 2% more than normal. This positive trend in monsoon likely to continue in July too.
Coastal Andhra (48%), Telangana (52%) and Rayalaseema (34%) got excess rainfall in June. Tamil Nadu too got 6% positive deviation during the same month in southern horizon. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada in excess for Western Horizon. East and NE India having major deficits ranging from -17% to -56%. These deficits are likely to recover in July as the monsoon progresses towards north.
Southwest Monsoon likely to progress further in more parts of Uttar Pradesh, remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, some more parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, NCR and Uttarkhand in next 48 hours. Off shore trough over West Coast likely to persist for 2 more days, this is likely to bring heavy downpour along the coast for the next 48 hours.
Tamil Nadu to remain generally dry and hot during the day. Few places over western parts of the state, along the western ghats likely to get light to moderate rainfall.

Coimbatore – Comfortable day and cooler night ahead with maximum temp to be around 33C and Min 24C.
Vellore – Partly cloudy and hot day likely and becoming cloudy by afternoon or evening. Max 39C and Min 28C.
Tiruchirapalli – Hot and Sunny day likely, Max 39C and Min 28C.
Madurai – Hot and sultry weather likely in the city, Max 39C and Min 27C.
