Monsoon Rains Reach Tamil Nadu
As expected, rains have commenced across various parts of coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai City, as moisture-filled easterlies have knocked on the doors of the state.
The Met Department is likely to announce the onset of the Northeast Monsoon by tomorrow (16th October 2025), as conditions have turned favourable.

Synoptic feature:
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the Southwest bay and adjoining areas of the equatorial Indian Ocean, currently driving the rainfall. This system is expected to move closer to Tamil Nadu and later shift into the southeast Arabian Sea, where it may intensify into a low-pressure area by 19/20th of October.
Rain to Continue:
Widespread rains are expected across Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh from today and will continue into next week as the monsoon remains active. Chennai City will also witness good spells of rain in the coming days.

Waves in Play & Long-Range Outlook:
An Equatorial Rossby Wave is currently passing over the Indian Ocean, bringing enhanced convection over peninsular India. With the MJO expected to enter Phase 2, these combined wave activities are likely to trigger a low-pressure area over the South Bay by next week, which has good potential to intensify further.
The stage is perfectly set for an active and vibrant start to the Northeast Monsoon 2025. Stay tuned for more updates!
