Depression to intensify and get closer to Chennai

The depression over southwest of Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary during past six hours and lay centered at 1730 hours IST of today, the 17th May 2016 over southwest Bay of Bengal near Lat. 12.0°N and Long. 80.7°E, about 120 km South-Southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to move North, North westwards towards North Tamilnadu South Andhra Pradesh coasts and further intensify into a deep depression during the next 24 hours.
The system is likely to be close to Chennai region during the morning hours of 18th May. It will move northwards and then recurve north, northeastwards and likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. Under its influence heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extreme falls likely over north coastal TN and South coastal AP. Squally winds of 55 to 65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph to prevail along the aforementioned areas.
