Enhanced Thunderstorm activity ahead over Tamil Nadu

The Southwest Monsoon 2025 has knocked on the doors of the Andaman Islands by the 13th and is set to reach Kerala within the next few days — This is many days ahead of the normal onset date of June 1st. As the monsoon winds strengthen over the Bay of Bengal branch, an upper air circulation (UAC) is seen taking shape over the west-central Bay, which is expected to enhance thunderstorm activity over Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the coming days.

As the UAC forms, it is likely to bring instability and wind convergence over Tamil Nadu, resulting in widespread thunderstorms during the afternoon to night time hours. This will significantly bring down the current harsh temperatures , bringing relief from summer heat.

Interior areas of Tamil Nadu are expected to witness widespread thunderstorms, which could spill over to the coast as steering winds turn favorable soon.

Coastal areas such as Chennai and Pondicherry may also experience thunderstorms in the coming days as steering winds will turn favorable..

Possible rains by afternoon today:

The current satellite image reveals a dense cloud mass moving from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu. If the storm sustains, it may bring rainfall over Chennai and surrounding areas by the afternoon.
