Heavy downpours lash Chennai City

The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has moved into the Gulf of Mannar, traveling in a west-northwest direction. This system has brought heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu’s coastal areas, including the KTCC and deltadistricts. Since yesterday morning, Chennai has experienced heavy downpours, with many parts of the city recording over 150 mm of rainfall from this system due to moisture surge and convergence.

Forecast:

As the system shifts westward towards the Arabian Sea, rainfall across Tamil Nadu is expected to gradually decreasing.

Delta districts and South Tamil Nadu: Heavy to very heavy rain is likely, followed by a reduction in intensity.

Fresh system:

Numerical weather models predict formation of a new low-pressure area over the Andaman Sea by Sunday. This system may approach the Tamil Nadu coast by 17th December – Tuesday, potentially bringing another spell of rainfall. Further updates will follow.
