Pongal is set to arrive and so does the bhogi. Chennai’s pollution level is set to increase on the bhogi day with people burning the old used materials. With fog dominating the morning of chennai, burning of old materials is set to make things worse. Smog is set to take stage on bhogi day morning and vehicle commuters will find it difficult to navigate.Last year during bhogi, the PM2.5 levels (Particulate Matter with diameter less than 2.5 micrometers, which are primary pollutants in Chennai) at Alandur was at 221, 144 at IIT and 246 at Manali. Levels above 200 are considered ‘poor’.The air quality index maintained by Atmos, however showed alarming levels of pollution. It showed Anna Salai PM2.5 levels at 555, and another one at Besant Nagar maintained by Atmos was at 628. A monitor maintained by Atmos at MKB Nagar showed PM2.5 levels at 459.These levels will have serious health implications for all but especially people with heart disease, lung disease, respiratory problem, pregnant women and children. So please avoid burning of materials in large numbers and particularly avoid burning of plastics and tyres.

Let us have a healthy and safe Pongal.
