Easterly wave beckons a wet spell for Coastal Tamil Nadu

An easterly wave is taking shape over South Bay of Bengal waters. It will ensue a wet spell for Coastal Tamilnadu starting today. Coastal districts from Ramnad to Chennai and parts of Puducherry will see renewed monsoon rains which will occur in spells over next 4-5 days. As Tamilnadu is already riding high on a historic monsoon, these spells should only keep the monsoon tally go up, which currently stands at 687mm as against normal of 391mm.

Delta districts in particular will see heaviest rains from this Easterly wave alongside parts of North Coastal TN. Though rains will be spread across 4-5 days, precipitation quantum will be lesser. As far as Chennai is concerned, the city will see intermittent rains from today and into the weekend. But the spells wouldn’t really be a threat which would otherwise warrant waterlogging problems owing to soil saturation.

As we look further ahead in coming weeks, there is some indication that dry air might seep into lower latitudes from mid December which indicates the waning monsoon conditions in the region as the ITCZ pushes further south. And the winter weather should settle in by then as well.
