Depression to cross North Tamil Nadu coast today

Depression centered over South West Bay of Bengal off North Tamil Nadu coasts will cross over the shores today. Under the influence of this system, heavy to very heavy rains at few places, with extremely heavy rains at isolated places is forecast for North Tamil Nadu today. Heavier rains will also extend its span towards South Andhra Pradesh coasts and Rayalaseema. Once the system moves further North-North West, rains are expected to taper off in Tamil Nadu significantly. Coming to the wind effect, 40-50kmph winds would prevail along and off North Tamil Nadu coasts for a day and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. People from low lying areas in Chennai metropolitan area are advised to keep vigil for any waterlogging eventualities.

The system is expected to weaken over land as it meanders Peninsula, and will eventually dissipate in next 2-3 days, but not before it precipitates some rains over Deccan. Patchy rains are forecast for the weekend by when easterlies become weak and disorganized. Long range forecasts indicate a possibility of next disturbance forming in Bay of Bengal later next week and the evolving situation will be monitored closely in upcoming days.
